Union Square's Paper Party

Thanks to all who came out to the Paper Party street fair, hosted by Union Square Main Streets. I had the opportunity to make the posters for the event and also had a table set up with some zines, prints, stickers and other various projects. Met a ton of awesome people, listened to some great music and gained lots of inspiration!

Gary Coles-Christensen
So I'm not a huge fan of floor coverings, but these rugs by Santa-Fe designer Gary Coles-Christensen are an exception. This week Gary launched Desi, a new brand with an online shop where you can browse and buy rugs online. Desi offers designs by Y Murata, Todd Scalise, Victoria Price, and Gary himself. The product showings are accompanied with personal descriptions from Gary along with his charming pen and ink drawings inspired by his trips to historical weaving capitals of the world like Turkey, Morocco, and India. Better yet, each Desi carpet carries the GoodWeave label, certifying that it was woven without the use of child labor.
Sol Lewitt
So I'm back from a week long getaway to the Berkshires, refreshed and inspired. We took a trip over to Mass MoCA where we saw an exhibit by Sol Lewitt. An incredible artist and thinker, Lewitt created the majority of his works through instructions that spelled out how to create his wall drawings, relying on others to create the work for him. This exhibit will be on display for the next 25 years, so be sure to check it out!

Brilliant example of marketing:
Account executives Dave Kuta and Michael Girts paired up with a creative team to devise a gutsy alternative marketing plan daring LeBron James to come and play for the Chicago bulls. They sent him these shoes in conjunction with several other ploys daring him to live up to the legacy that sports icon Michael Jordan left in basketball history.

That's a pretty tough promotion to pass up. You can read the whole story here.

Design for Web 2.0
So I stumbled across this article today regarding colorful logos and how great it is that logo designers are veering away from one or two color logos these days. And in the mix there were some very clever logos, like this anbigram for Odigo:

or this logo for Illusion Studio:

But most of these logos are just uninspired, overdecorated and thoughtless. They "work" because they're colorful and bright and make people "ooh" and "aah". But they all look the same. Personally, I'm getting sick of the overly ornate, gradient rich graphics that seem to
define Web 2.0.

Photoshop, anyone?

Fryd English.

I am CRAZY about this space designed by Fryd English. White with soft color accents- kills me every time!
Hah!
Maybe sometimes innovation isn't always an upgrade! This was a device suggested in response to the new iPhone 4's problems with left-handed calling.
Tobias Wong
In memory of the late Tobias Wong, a tremendously influential designer and creative who passed away one month ago today. The New York Times posted an article this week outlining his career and accidental suicide.
Thank you...
...to everyone who came out last night to the Distillery Gallery in South Boston to celebrate the opening of Hypo Typo, a display of works incorporating various forms of text. The turnout was great and everyone's work looked amazing! Check it out if you're in the area- it's on display until July 15th!
Art Opening Tonight!

Date: | Thursday, June 24, 2010 |
Time: | 6:00pm - 9:00pm |
Location: | The Distillery Gallery |
Street: | 516 East Second Street |
“Hypo Typo“, opening June 24th, is an exhibit presenting a survey of artists which utilize text in 2D and 3D works. Curated by Snow Project, the show will feature a range of artwork created by artists of varying career stages. Though the premise is simple, the group of exhibitors is diverse in both background and approach to the exhibit’s criterion. Preexisting and new works created specifically for the exhibit will be included.
Snow Project represents the ongoing curatorial efforts of Boston-based artists Michael Dacey and Alex Feinstein. The venture began in 2008 with the “New Year’s Resolutions” series at the Washington Street Art Center in Somerville, MA. This series of enormously popular annual group exhibits includes “Draw Drawings Every Day” and “Hey I Know that Guy”.
Hypo Typo will include works by many local artists, including yours truly.
